The Society for American Music
The mission of the Society for American Music is
to stimulate the appreciation, performance, creation
and study of American musics of all eras and in all their diversity,
including the full range of activities and institutions associated with these musics
throughout the world.

The World History Association

The WHA is the foremost organization
for the promotion of world history
through the encouragement of teaching, research, and publication.
It was founded in 1982 by a group of teachers and academics
determined to address the needs and interests of what was then
a newly emerging historical sub-discipline
and teaching field.

The new world history
emerged out of the shift in higher and secondary education
away from a sole emphasis on national and regional histories
toward broader cross-cultural, comparative, and global approaches....

Since then, the WHA has grown four-fold,
has garnered accolades for its award winning Journal of World History,
and has played a seminal role in shaping the field
in the U.S. and around the world. Important for American secondary education, WHA members have been instrumental
in establishing standards for World History teaching at the national and state levels
as well as designing the AP World History course.
At present, although its membership is still predominantly North American,
the WHA is represented in over 35 countries
and has an affiliate relationship with world history societies in Europe and Australia.

FOLKLORE OR OTHER ORGANIZATIONS WHICH PRIMARILY CONCERN CULTURAL TRADITIONS

The Folklore Society (FLS) was founded in 1878
and was one of the first organisations
in the world devoted to the study of traditional culture.
The term 'folklore' describes the overarching concept that holds together a number of aspects of vernacular culture and cultural traditions, and is also the name of the discipline which studies them.

The Folklore Society's interest and expertise covers topics
such as traditional music, song, dance and drama, narrative, arts and crafts, customs and belief.

We are also interested in popular religion,
traditional and regional food, folk medicine, children's folklore, traditional sayings, proverbs rhymes and jingles.

Under the terms of the registration of our charitable status, our aims are to foster folklore research
and recording worldwide,
and to make the results of such study available to all, whether members of the Society or not

Mission statement:

The mission of the Institute for Music, History, and Cultural Traditions (IMHCT)
is to celebrate music's essential role in human history and culture,
and to promote understanding and enjoyment of the musical arts
-- as they manifest in history and culture --
through research, scholarship, and performance.

The Institute's mission emphasizes a strong commitment
to an interdisciplinary approach.
That commitment encompasses integration of the humanities and the arts, and honors all genres of music.
While openly embracing all world cultures,
our focus will be, in general, on North American, Celtic,
and British Isles traditions.

To this end, the Institute will produce publications,
events, and workshops, and maintain online resources.
